A Buoy Instead of an Anchor

It all started with
You
You who I thought I knew so well,
but you were just a kid,
and we were new,
pretending love
like it was a beautiful
and simple game
I was the first and she was the last
and who could have known and who would have guessed
and here is the outcome
and I've no one to blame
for this wonderful mess
So I'll be the rough draft,
send you on your way,
a life uninterrupted
and my heart, torn to shreds,
I will mend with the
years and the months and
the days
And a friend once said
"it's like tying yourself
to a buoy instead of an anchor"
And she was more right
than anyone else
and I swear it's much simpler
than it ever will sound
So let love be an anchor
but don't tie yourself down
let love be an anchor
but don't let yourself drown.
