My heart is crashing, fuller than the gray
Pacific in the middle of a swell,
and I can tell from the sand behind your
ears and in your hair that you have too
been stranded on this shore I know so well.
Your eyes are always searching, never resting,
as if wanting something more,
and I can tell from the black on your
boots that the road you're traveling is one
I've been down before.
I want to be a part of you, and share what
people share when they are kissing in the rain,
'cause I can see in your sad but lovely
smile that you've known love and you've known pain.
There are pieces of your past that can
remain there and be left alone,
I don't need to feel your every long-gone
sorrow, i've had sorrow enough of my own.
And I can't promise you a life that's
perfect and clean and white,
but I can promise you that these arms
will hold you and that I can sometimes make it right.
Together, you and I can look to the
skies, and face the rain that waits so
patiently in clouds above,
because today I give to you my pure
and simple, trusting love.
